About Contemporary East

Contemporary East Inc is a non-profit organization founded in New York City in 2022. Its purpose is to introduce the beauty of the eastern expression of improvisational music, performed by the various musicians. The participants are not only Asian Americans and Asians, but also musicians from various cultural backgrounds whose improvisational music has the beauty of eastern expression.

New York City is probably the largest concentration of Asian performers doing contemporary improvisational music in the world. It is our desire that Contemporary East will build an awareness of the aesthetics of the eastern expression in NYC and start a movement which will be followed by the next generation.

There is something very important about ensemble improvisation that you can get only by playing together. We started jam session for a contemporary improvisation every month on the first Wednesday night at Greenwich House Music School in Manhattan. Door is open to anybody who is interested. It’s to share the precious moments in the free improvisational sessions and to inspire each other’s creativity.
